A bit about me

Dr. Shawna Shapiro is a Professor of Writing and Linguistics at Middlebury College in Vermont (USA). Much of her research focuses on college transitions for immigrant and refugee-background students, and on inclusive and innovative approaches to multilingual/L2 writing.

She has published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including College Composition and Communication,  TESOL Quarterly, Research in the Teaching of English, Composition Studies, Foreign Language Annals, Language Awareness, and Equity & Excellence in Education.

Shawna’s first two books were with TESOL/NAFSA and Multilingual Matters, and her latest book, Cultivating Critical Language Awareness in the Writing Classroom, was published by Routledge in 2022. She is current working on a 2nd edition of that book, by the way, and would love to hear from readers 😉

She has also written for public audiences, with Inside Higher Ed (e.g., here) and The Conversation (e.g., here), among others, and she is active in several educational initiatives in her local community aimed at promoting educational equity and inclusion for immigrant and refugee-background students.
